Maintaining a safe workplace is almost but not entirely totally unlike following OSHA regulations. If complying with OSHA regulations at your lowest up front cost is your goal, then I suggest you read another site. However, if you are truly interested in keeping your employees safe and productive in your workplace then here are some workplace safety tips for you. They might even help you comply with some OSHA regulations along the way.

My Top Ten Workplace Safety Tips:
Maintain a clean work area. Not only will you remove many hazards from a work area by keeping it clean, but you will also provide a more productive work environment for your employees. Use guards and engineering solutions wherever possible instead of relying on PPE - personal protective equipment. PPE is hard to police and uncomfortable to wear. Find a way to prevent the exposure in the first place. Your workers will be much more productive if they are comfortable Assume your employees want to work safely and give them that chance. Many safety incentive programs seemed to be based on the idea that employees want to get hurt and you have to bribe them not to stick their hand in the machine. If you have that idea, then these tips are not for you. Give clear work instructions. Make sure your employees know the right way to do what you expect of them. Don't just give them a list of things not to do. Include safety instructions in every procedure you write. Don't dwell on worst case scenarios but focus on what is most likely to occur. Start by focusing your energy in preventing your most common incidents. That means you will have to keep an accurate OSHA incident log even if it looks bad to some manager you report to. Love your employees. Don't confuse this with something that might get you a sexual harassment claim. I mean, care about your employees and let them know you do. If a machine is becoming unsafe, shut it down before someone gets hurt. Spend time getting to know the work your employees do. Even if you once did that job, it is likely it is done differently by different people. Look at what people are actually doing and compare this to what is written in procedures. If the procedures are different from the actual practice , find out why. Maintain the machinery in good working order. Many times employees get into dangerous situations by having to compensate for a machine defect or wear. In the case of wear, it may have occurred so gradually that they think it is normal. A strong preventive maintenance program makes for a strong safety program. Avoid unnecessary hazards. Look for new materials or equipment that can eliminate the hazards your workers are exposed to. Maintain a clean work area. See workplace safety tip number one above. Potential exposures to hazardous material and conditions can be dramatically reduced simply by keeping the work area clean. And the benefit in employee productivity and morale is worth the effort even without the safety incentive.

Since red is the warmest of all colors, using wallpapers in the red color family will make your room appear cheerful, bold, dramatic and exciting. Using orange based wallpaper will provide a welcoming and cheerful room that will make you feel warm and comfortable. The effect of using an orange based wallpaper in a room is much like the effects of red. However, since the orange hues in wallpaper provide a softer tint, this is a good color mixer and will provide a cheerful and exciting effect in your room. Orange wallpaper is great for kitchens and family rooms. The most interesting fact about orange is that although it creates a warm glow, it can also make people tire easily.

The yellow color family of hues include lemon, straw, gold, tan, tobacco and cream shades. The characteristics of using a yellow based wallpaper will be to create a warm, luminous and radiant feel in the room. When you use colors from the yellow family in your wallpaper, this will make your room appear larger and brighter, due to the colors light reflective quality. Yellow wallpaper can light up your room without making the room feel smaller. Yellow is most used in kitchens. The most little know fact about using yellow wallpaper is that studies show that babies tend to cry more and children are more argumentative in nurseries decorated in yellow that in pink, blue or green.

The green color family includes hues such as olive, forest, mint, pea, grass and sea greens. When green wallpaper is selected, it makes your room feel refreshing and cool. When green wallpaper is used in lighter shades, it will make your room seem larger because it feels like the walls are further away. Green wallpaper will provide an atmosphere of relaxation to a room and is an important shade where restfulness is important. A little known, but interesting fact about green is that it is the color that is the least tiring to the eye which is the reason why surgeons scrubs are green.

The blue color family includes hues of sky, royal, midnight, baby and powder blues. Since blue is the coolest of all colors, blue wallpaper is the most receding and serene which makes it a popular wallpaper choice. Blue wallpaper will make a room appear more spacious and airy. Using lighter colors against a blue wallpaper will make the furniture or furnishings appear more luminescent and really stand out. An interesting fact about the color blue is that people associate stability and leadership with this color and that is why you will often see important documents like graduation certificates bound in blue.

The purple color family includes shades of violet, plum, lavender and orchid. Purple is an impressive hue and when used in wallpaper it creates a bold statement. However, purple wallpaper also creates a quiet feeling in the atmosphere around it. Dark purple wallpaper makes objects appear formal and rich and transitional purple hues will feel cool when mixed with blues and warm when mixed with red. Purple wallpaper offers quite a bit of versatility in styles depending on how you use it. Most people know that purple was associated with royalty, but a little known fact about this color is that in medieval times only royalty was allowed to wear purple.

From the 16th century to as late as the early 20th century the Middle East had a great impact on the trade of antique carpets as well as the markets that produced them.

Any oriental rug that was imported into Europe had a high probability of traveling through the Middle East while Persian rugs were commonly traded as well. The history of the rug dates back to many years BC (with the oldest rug dating back to the fourth or fifth century B.C.), but rugs did not find themselves used on a grand scale until the 16th century when they replaced the every day straw rug that was used in Europe.

Portugal's possession of the island of Hormuz in 1514 would give the country a major advantage in the Persian rug trade, and also made Persia uneasy regarding the Portuguese presence. In 1553, England would enter the rug trade with the establishment of what would become known as the Muscovy Company. The Muscovy Company sought to import oriental rugs and other riches via a northern route and required passage through Iran, which was granted until the northern route was abandoned in 1581.

During the early 1600s, Persia (Modern day Iran) acted as a middleman for the purchases of rugs on behalf of Polish royalty from Persia. The English East India company was founded in 1600 and would later threaten Portuguese supremacy of the India trade. In 1615, the first trade for Persian silk was established between England and Persia despite Portugal's best efforts to intercept the ship. England now threatened to gain dominance in both the Indian and Persian trade markets.

By 1619, Portugal demanded that Persia no longer trade with England. Persia requested and obtained the help of England, and by 1621, Persia had regained control of the island of Hormuz due to the English assistance. This would be the beginning of many wars between European nations over trade routes and dominance for quite some time. In 1722, however, the Afghans would invade Persia and trade to all of Europe would be interrupted.

The Dutch, English and French abandoned all of their trading posts along the Arabian Gulf due to the instability of Persian rule and the wars sparked in Europe. The rug trade had all but died until the reign of Karim Kahn Zand from 1750 until 1779. During this time, the British were persuaded to resume trade with Persia. Persian silk was incorporated into European fashion and was used for clothing as well as rugs.

Trade flourished until the 1860s, when there was an outbreak of silkworm disease that devastated the Persian silk industry. Persia attempted to use cotton as a cash crop at the time but these attempts would fail due competition from America and Egypt. Persia's economy would continue to decline as the European and American textile industries would continue to produce higher quality products and Persia faced wars with England and Russia.

It was in the ending years of the 19th century that the Middle East would return to glory in the carpet industry due to investments by local and foreign partners. To this day, these rugs are Iran's most profitable export aside the oil industry. The rugs dramatically increased in size, becoming much larger and the industry flourished due to the numerous large investments by capitalists, both locally and abroad.

Foreign investment in the Persian textile industry would remain steady until the end of the 1920s when Iran saw a more nationalistic government rise to power. However, our fascination with Middle Eastern rugs has not died with our investments and antique Persian rugs continue to be sought out by many in Europe and America. The Persian rug trade was both founded and molded by war and diplomacy, and with each rug comes a feeling of connection to history and beauty in the mind of the owner.
